I was born in Washington, DC, and went home to Kensington, Maryland.

I went to Deerfield Academy, graduating in 1969, then went on to Bucknell University, graduating in 1973.  I graduated from the American University College of Law, summa cum laude, in 1979.  I worked with Dickstein, Shapiro & Morin in Washington after graduation, and moved to Schlumberger in 1984, first in Atlanta and then in Paris.  Joined Amoco in 1988 in Chicago, and in 1996 moved to Hong Kong.  Moved to Houston in 2001, and then to Leander, Texas, in 2020.

I married Pamela Simpson in 1981, and had a daughter, Jocelyn, in 1985, and a son , Todd, in 1989.
